So lovely. Vani and I got to spend a month in Italy in 2011, between the Locarno film festival and the Venice film festival I’ll never forget our time there.
I lived in Florence for four years and worked in a design gallery on Via Maggio, so I feel you on all of this ❤️ learning Italian was one of the best things I ever did! I look forward to following along and hearing if you do choose to stay in Palermo 😊 also, I highly recommend Still Life if you lived in Florence, such a beautiful book.
How glorious! I'm sure you had a spectacular time. I'm going to explore as many ways to learn the language as I can, as I'm sure I'll find one that will click better. Thank you for recommending the book – I shall look for it asap! Where do you live now and would you want to live in Italy again?
I'm currently next door to Italy, in Graz :) But I won't be here for much longer. As for would I live there again, it's a tough one! I think I would struggle with the South given the politics. I left because the racism was getting much worse which was very depressing (though lots of Europe is in the same boat, unfortunately), and Florence got more and more overrun with tourists behaving badly, making it very difficult for locals. Only one of my Italian friends has stayed living in the city since I left! All of the others have sold their apartments and moved out, they feel like the place has got so nasty. It's very sad, but there's still so much good there too. The heart and the language and the slow pace of life are all still winners for me!
Yes, that is depressing. I hear you. My other options (in terms of countries) all have horrible leaders, and I don't see any of it getting better any time soon. Likewise, I only have one friend still in Florence and she may leave soon too. Graz looks lovely!
Thank you so very much, Gillian! I hope to find out more soon of the possibility of things from my end. I shall brace myself for the bureaucracy! 💪🧡 Do you recommend resources for moving here? It would be very helpful if so. Thank you!
Nupu, I’m so pleased you’re here on Substack! It’s the perfect place for your beautiful writing and painting. It was a pleasure to read this story of Italy, I hope you find your home and I’m looking forward to reading more 💛
