I didn’t see the Oscars this year. I don’t have a TV, and the time difference was tough, but really because I hadn’t seen most of the films. To mildly keep my finger on the cultural pulse, I watched some clips from the evening online – like John Cena with no clothes on stage, and Ryan Gosling singing I’m Just Ken.
And it reminded me of watching Gosling in a film called Crazy Stupid Love. If you haven’t seen it, it’s a rom com that nicely inverts the gender in the ugly-ducking-becoming-a-swan after a relationship breakup, and has a watchable cast that also includes Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, Marisa Tomei and Kevin Bacon. But it’s not remotely, you know, brilliant. Your life is not incomplete if you skip this. It’s not so memorable that it will stay with you forever.
Even so, I have watched it countless times.
Here’s the caveat: I watch it only when I’m on a plane.
